Cost to community for items
I found myself in a life-changing situation when I transitioned from juggling multiple jobs to becoming a stay-at-home mom, not just for my child, but also for my siblings after my mom passed away. In that challenging time, I deeply wanted to feel like I was making a difference for my family. One day, I saw a group in the South running a remarkable program where they traded items and offered them at low costs. This inspired me to create something similar in my own community.
We began on my back porch and driveway, simply trading clothes while placing a small free table out for anyone in need. It was heartwarming to see people engaging, as many opted to trade instead of purchasing. As the months went by and our little initiative grew, we moved into a larger home. This new space allowed us to open up the entire driveway and part of the garage, creating a welcoming environment for people to come and both trade and receive items for free.
As we continued, the support from our community blossomed, with many donating items so we could offer even more for free. However, I soon faced the reality of having over 100 people lined up in my driveway and experiencing the loss of some personal belongings, which made me realize how important safety was. In search of a more secure environment, I began attending a church I cherished from my childhood. A kind woman there approached me with the idea of holding our events at the church, which filled me with hope. For a couple of years, we worked tirelessly to set up and take down the space, but it eventually became overwhelming. In a pivotal moment, we established a $3 donation room, which generated enough funds for us to rent a building. A local gentleman generously offered us affordable rent for a few months, giving us the chance to find our footing.
Thanks to the continued support of our community, we’ve been growing ever since, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
